Playback

It plays what the Apple TV can't

H.264 and HEVC go straight to Apple's player, where HDR, Dolby Vision and frame-rate matching belong. AV1, VP9, MPEG-2 and the rest are handed to a built-in VLC engine and played from the original file, so your server doesn't have to re-encode anything.

4K HDR remuxes used to stall every few seconds on other setups: JellyGoose asks the server for the untouched stream instead of a live re-encode, which took one 66 Mbps film from a 20-second start and constant buffering to two seconds and none.

What a file actually is, at a glance

Every movie and episode shows its resolution, HDR format, codecs, audio layout, container and bitrate, read from the file itself. Move through a show's episodes and the page follows along, describing the one you're on.

Filters worth keeping

Sort and filter a library, then pin that view to the menu: unwatched films by genre, or every episode added recently across all your shows. Long-press any poster for play, watched, favourite, or to clear something from Continue Watching.

Follow an actor through your library

Click a face on any detail page to see everything else they're in that you actually own, newest first, and jump straight into it.

Server

Run the server from the sofa

Add, rename and remove libraries, add folders, scan for changes or refresh metadata, and watch the progress on screen. Subtitles and auto-play settings are saved to your Jellyfin account, so they follow you to every other client.

The details

Direct play first

Files the Apple TV understands are played untouched. Everything else is repackaged, or handed to VLC, before anyone re-encodes anything.

Matches your TV

Sets the frame rate and dynamic range to the video's own before playback starts, then puts them back when you leave.

Resume everywhere

Progress is reported to Jellyfin as you watch, so Continue Watching stays in step with every other client.

Quick Connect

Sign in with a code from another device instead of typing a password with the remote.

Subtitles

Uses your account's subtitle language and mode, applied to both players.

Nothing phones home

The app talks to your server and nowhere else. No accounts, no analytics, no third parties.

    An Apple TV

    Anything running tvOS 18 or later. On an Apple TV 4K you also get HDR, Dolby Vision and frame-rate matching.

    Your own Jellyfin server

    Any recent Jellyfin, on your network or reachable over the internet. There's no JellyGoose account and no service in the middle.

  3. 3

    Sign in once

    Type your server address, then sign in with your password or a Quick Connect code from your phone. The app remembers it.
